Introduction
If you are contemplating a post-graduate/professional degree study in Education, then the College of Education at the University of Ghana has the best option for you. The School of Education and Leadership at the College, through its Department of Teacher Education, has developed the Master of Arts degree in Education to develop world-class human resources and capabilities to meet national development needs and global challenges. This sandwich programme aims at exposing students to best practices in teaching and learning using the latest proven learning technologies and support the utilisation of research both to inform teaching and to tackle the broader issues of education. All the courses are designed to equip those who wish to begin a teaching career at the senior high level with skills to maximise student learning outcomes.
Objectives
Currently in Ghana, graduates from non-education backgrounds teach in public and private schools around the country. This programme is primarily designed to provide graduates from non-education disciplines the opportunity to become professional teachers by gaining the requisite educational knowledge, skills and practices to be effective teachers in Ghana and in other international contexts. The programme also seeks to formalise the training that teachers need to develop the needed skills in pedagogical knowledge and practices relevant to the subjects they teach.
Specifically, the programme will enable students to develop:
- Broad-based knowledge and understanding of theories of education within the Ghanaian and Sub-Saharan African context.
- Essential technological skills as well as the management of appropriate technological resources to enhance learning.
- A practical competent to facilitate the expectations accorded to courses senior high schools.
- Better skills and understanding of issues relating to teacher quality, preparation, training and development of leadership identities, and to critically examine such identity formation in the context of equality, inclusiveness and social justice.

Introduction
The current educational landscape is characterised by challenges that require practitioners to develop cutting-edge solutions for the educational sector. It is in light of this that the School of Education and Leadership, at the College of Education, University of Ghana, through its Department of Educational Studies and Leadership, has developed the MA Educational Leadership and Management programme to offer prospective students the required expertise to resolve the numerous challenges faced by the educational sector. The programme prepares educational practitioners in school leadership and management, teaching and learning processes, health and safety in schools and educational contexts, participation and involvement of the school community and resource mobilisation and use.
Objectives
In our contemporary world, work schedules, family commitments and other responsibilities undermine one’s desire to further their education. This MA Sandwich programme is designed to help individuals access high-quality research-intensive education, while attending to other responsibilities.
Essentially, the programme will enable students to develop:
- Broad-based knowledge and understanding of theories of educational leadership and management for better engagement in issues and debates in the field of education.
- A range of frameworks for understanding learners’ performance, better and new ways of professional development and organisational learning so as to enhance professional practice in the Ghanaian context.
- Better skills and understanding of issues relating to teacher quality, preparation, training and development of leadership identities and to critically examine such identity formation in the context of equality, inclusiveness and social justice.

PROGRAMME DURATION
Each of the Sandwich programmes is spread over two (2) semesters designed to be run as follows:
Coursework for the programme will be completed in two semesters. The first semester will begin during the Easter break for three (3) weeks (15th April to 3rd May, 2019) and continue during the long vacation period for five (5) weeks (22nd July to 16th August, 2019). A similar schedule will be repeated in 2020 for the second semester.
MINIMUM ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
A good first degree (with at least second class lower division) from a recognised university.

How to Apply:
Ghanaian applicants can obtain the University of Ghana application e-voucher at GH¢200.00 from any branch of the following banks: Zenith Bank, Universal Merchant Bank, Ecobank, HFC Bank, Agricultural Development Bank, Unibank, Ghana Commercial Bank and Fidelity Bank. Applicants should follow carefully the instructions on the voucher when completing the online application form.
Applicants outside Ghana and non-Ghanaian applicants are required to pay to the University a non-refundable application processing fee of US$110.00. This fee can be paid directly or wire transferred into the UNIVERSITY OF GHANA ECOBANK ACCOUNT.
